Hello Vic!

Hopefully you have been keeping an eye on the ListServ, our best way of notifying you of all the events that Jenn and myself are organizing FOR YOU!!

What have we got coming up?

That’s a great question!

**This Wednesday (Feb.2) we are going to the Yuk Yuks Comedy Club to see some stand up comedy. Tickets are limited and available at the Vusac office (BC 5a) for only $8 for two people! A great deal for which we can thank UTSU!

**After that? Jenn is organizing “All You Need is Love,” an UltraNow Open Mic night on February 11 at 9pm in Alumni Hall (in Old Vic, not at St. Mikes!). With a date so close to Valentine’s Day she just couldn’t ignore the love theme but she has put a very interesting and worthwhile spin. Be there and spread some love!

That is all for our events for now! Not Enough? I agree, but Vusac is broke so what can you do?

————————————————

Instead check out some of the fantatic things the city of Toronto has to offer right now!

Like what?

**The Tim Burton exhibit at TIFF! What?! TIFF isn’t only a film festival? I know, it sounds like crazy talk!

Check out all the details here!

**Not a fan of Tim Burton? Why not go to the AGO? During the Marharaja exhibit everyone under 25 gets in free! I know thats where I am going to get some readings done this week and I hope to see you there.

————————————————

That’s it for now, check in next week for an update from Jenn!

HAVE A GREAT WEEK!
- Kim

Hello everyone! =)

I’d first like to start off by sharing a bunch of warm thank-yous!

Thank you to everyone for participating in this year’s International Week. It was such a wonderful and successful week, and it was definitely a lot of fun! Special props to those who showed up at International Night Open Mic! All of the performances were phenomenal! It’s always great to see such amazing talent in our Vic community. Love it!

I also want to thank everyone who came out to the TSO’s Creepy Classics concert! It was a great way to celebrate Halloween this year, and what an amazing show it was! Not only was the music so fitting with the spirit of Halloween, it was also entertaining to each see member of the orchestra dress up (my personal favourite was the tuba player dressed up as a tooth fairy – so awesome!). I hope you all had just as much fun as I did!

Finally, thanks to those who joined us for the Field Trip for Holocaust Education Week. It was a moving experience to hear Pinchas Gutter speak about his experience as a Holocaust survivor, and I was really thankful to have been able to attend. I hope you felt the same way!

What’s happening for Productions this coming week? Not one, but TWO exciting things!

1. The Bob!
It’s the 138th Bob Sketch Comedy Revue this year, celebrating the 175th anniversary of Vic by having it historically-themed. The show is taking place on Novmber 18, 19, 20, at 8pm at the Isabel Bader Theatre. Tickets are on sale now – $10 for students/seniors, and $12 for adults. Get them online at U of T Tix or at the VUSAC office (BC 01).

Want more information about The Bob? Check out the website: http://thebob.vusac.ca

2. Wicked the Musical!
That’s right, we are selling tickets to see Wicked, the new musical about the untold stories of the witches of Oz. The show is taking place on Thursday, November 25th, beginning at 7:30pm at Canon Theatre. Tickets are on sale at a discounted price of $70!!! Get yours at the VUSAC office starting this coming Wednesday!

That’s all for now! Have a wonderful long weekend (study break – woohoo!) and an amazing week!

Good evening!

Here is this week’s updates from Productions!

First off, Vic’s trip to Sratford ran this past Saturday and it was AMAZING! The costumes in Kiss Me, Kate were so entertaining and Dangerous Liaisons may have been the BEST thing I have ever seen – the French know how to do love, sex, and manipulation! To the 19 students who accompanied me I thank you for making the trip that much better and I hope you all had as much fun as I did!

Next! This week is International Week!!!!! That means amazing events every day this week. The highlight for the productions commission? INTERNATIONAL NIGHT! That is happening at 8pm on Friday, October 29 in the Cat’s Eye. Come out fo some great talent and internationally themed food (free VOCA dinner available from 6pm-8pm and snack provided by for the duration of the evening). If music is not your thing then you should instead come out to see VCDS’s first show of the year 12 Angry Men! Student tickets are just $10 and available in advance from U of T Tix at Hart House.

Halloween is on a Sunday this year, what could be better than spending the afternoon (3pm) at Roy Thomson Hall for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra’s Creepy Classics Concert! Check out the Facebook group! http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/event.php?eid=126564374064278

Ticket are only $15!!! Get yours from the Vusac Office before they sell out!

One more thing! So this year Productions has teamed up with E&E for a Field trip for Holocaust Education Week.

“The void: In Search of Lost Memory” Travel with a group of students to hear Pinchas Gutter, a holocaust survivor, speak about his experiences. http://www.holocausteducationweek.com/

-E-mail educationandequity@vusac.ca to sign-up

-Monday, November 1, Meet between 6-6:15pm in Reading Room (Birge Carnegie)

That’s all for this week, there is plenty of fun/amazing things to keep you from getting to stressed about midterms and essays.

Events coming up soon? THE BOB

It is the 138th Bob this year and it is going to be a big one to celebrate Vic’s 175th.

Also in November? WE GOT TICKETS TO A WICKED SHOW! Can you guess what it is? More info on that coming in the future!

All the best,

Hey there Vic!

My name is Jennifer, and I am the Productions MAL on VUSAC this year. Kim and I have planned a great number of amazing events taking place throughout the year that we hope will be of interest to everyone. It’s going to be an exciting year and I’m looking forward to seeing it all unfold!

As Kim mentioned, we will be giving weekly updates about the upcoming events taking place. The first event to look out for is STRATFORD! On October 23rd (i.e. THIS Saturday!), we will be going to the Festival Theatre at Stratford, ON to see two shows: the matinee show is “Kiss Me, Kate”, and the evening show is “Dangerous Liaisons.” Tickets are only $50!!! This includes the bus ride and entry to the two shows – what a deal!! The bus will be leaving at 10am and will be arriving back to Vic at 1am (which is commuter friendly, as the subways are still running! Yay!). Tickets are on sale at the VUSAC office. The last day to purchase them is this Friday at 5:30pm, so don’t delay!

The second event coming up is the International Night Ultra Now, happening on October 29th at 8pm in the Cat’s Eye. This event is one of the wonderful events taking place during International Week (October 25th – October 29th). Come out and support your fellow Vic students and their amazing talent!

The next event is the Creepy Classics Concert with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra. Happening at the Roy Thompson Hall, this show will be taking place at 3pm on October 31st - that’s right, it’s on Halloween! It’ll be a great way to get into the spirit. Tickets are on sale right now for $15 at the VUSAC Office, so get them while you still can!

That is all for now! If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to stop by the VUSAC Office, or send an e-mail to either Kim (productions@vusac.ca) or myself (jennifer@vusac.ca). We hope to see you at the events!

A New Year, New Shows!

Hello Victoria College!

My name is Kim and I am the Productions Commissioner on VUSAC this year. What does that mean you might inquire? Well basically I am responsible for making local theatre more available to students, producing the Bob, and hosting as many UltraNows as possible!!! UltraNow = fancy word we use to describe Open Mics.

Along with arranging all of these fabulous things it is also my responsibility to let you all know what events are happening – hence this blog! SO! Every week there will be an update made to this site by either myself or the Productions Member at Large Jennifer.

So what can you look forward too from Productions? On October 23, 2010 I have arranged a trip to Stratford, ON to see 2 shows at the Festival Theatre. The matinee show is Kiss Me, Kate and the evening show is Dangerous Liaisons. Exciting, right?!?! It is more exciting that Vusac is paying for the bus to get you there. All the trip costs you is $50. That is the student price for both shows without tax, oh and I didn’t mention yet that we did not get the student rate on the matinee when booking the tickets? What a deal for you! Tickets will be on sale until Friday, October 22, 2010 but you shouldn’t wait until the last minute to get a ticket as they have already begun to sell!

Later this month? Keep an eye out for International Night UltraNow (October 29 @ 8pm in the Cat’s Eye) and the Creepy Classics Concert with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (tickets for $15 go on sale next week)!

Hi all,

We organized a trip to Cirque du Soleil’s Ovo last Thursday November 5th! It was a great success and we SOLD OUT all the tickets! AMAZING!! Thanks to everyone who came out… it was certainly a show not to be missed.

For those of you not lucky enough to grab a ticket, the show was mind-blowing, from someone contorting themselves around a spiral pole, to trapeze artists flying (one fell… made my heart jump a bit haha), to a couple of “spiders” being double jointed in almost every part of their body and having a mad duel with the “grasshoppers” and even a few people jumping on trampolines and climbing wall Spider-man style! Being Cirque du Soleil, of course the costumes were UNBELIEVABLE (the “grasshoppers” has extra appendages to make their legs jut out)… I was also a big fan of the love story between the “ladybug” and the tall lanky one (not quite sure what he was supposed to be…), but there is one question that remains unanswered: WHAT WAS INSIDE THE EGG??? This bothered me to the point that I almost ran on stage after the show and grabbed it, but a friend mentioned it may not have been socially acceptable haha. Oh well, next time (I kid… or do I?).

What did y’all think?

And don’t forget: Canada’s longest-running sketch comedy show November 19th-21st!

Any questions? Don’t hesitate to pop by the VUSAC office in Birge Carnegie Room 1, or send an e-mail to either productions@vusac.ca or gabrielleblaisjones@vusac.ca! Thanks for reading!

http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=129138853639&index=1#/events.php?ref=sb

Tickets are $65.00, include a trip there and back, and discounted tickets, take a look below to see what Stratford is saying about their shows:

West Side Story:
Two rival gangs, the Jets and the Sharks, wage a turf war in the mean streets of New York City. But when Tony, best friend of Jets leader Riff, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Sharks leader Bernardo, simmering tensions escalate toward a shocking finale.

With its explosive dance numbers and unforgettable score, this modern-day retelling of Romeo and Juliet changed the face of the American musical.

The Importance of Being Earnest
Dashing men-about-town John Worthing and Algernon Moncrieff pursue fair ladies Gwendolen Fairfax and Cecily Cardew. Matters are complicated by the imaginary characters invented by both men to cover their on-the-sly activities – not to mention the disapproval of Gwendolen’s mother, the formidable Lady Bracknell.

One of the funniest comedies in the English language – and a critique of the conventions and hypocrisies of so-called polite society that remains stingingly pertinent even today.
